For many women and men, the pain of abortion is something they try to bury deep inside, hoping that if they ignore it long enough, it will eventually disappear. But the reality is that unresolved grief doesn’t go away, it lingers, affecting our emotions, relationships, and even our spiritual walk.
At She Found His Grace and He Found His Grace, we have walked with many men and women who once believed they didn’t need healing. They thought they were fine, until God gently revealed that healing wasn’t about punishment or reliving the past. It was about freedom.
So why do so many avoid healing after abortion?
The Lies We Believe About Abortion Healing
1. “It’s in the past. I don’t need to deal with it.”
This is one of the most common lies. Many believe that because their abortion happened years—maybe even decades—ago, they should just move on. But past wounds don’t disappear simply because time passes. Unprocessed pain has a way of resurfacing in unexpected ways—whether through depression, anxiety, broken relationships, anger, or addictions.
Truth: Healing is not about dwelling on the past. It’s about allowing God to restore what was broken so you can move forward in freedom.
2. “God could never forgive me.”
Many believe their abortion is an unforgivable sin. They carry shame and guilt, convinced that God’s grace covers other sins but not this one. This lie keeps people trapped in spiritual darkness, believing they are unworthy of redemption.
Truth: There is no sin too big for God’s grace. Psalm 103:12 reminds us that “as far as the east is from the west, so far has he removed our transgressions from us.” God isn’t waiting to condemn you—He’s waiting to heal you.
3. “If I talk about it, I’ll fall apart.”
The fear of facing the pain head-on can feel overwhelming. Many women and men believe that if they start talking about their abortion, they won’t be able to handle the emotions that come with it.
Truth: Healing is a process, and you don’t have to go through it alone. In a safe, Christ-centered environment, you can take small steps toward healing at your own pace. God meets us in our brokenness, and He is gentle with the wounded.
4. “I have to punish myself for what I’ve done.”
Some believe they must suffer silently, thinking they don’t deserve joy or healing. They may sabotage their own happiness, believing they are unworthy of love and redemption.
Truth: Jesus already took the punishment for your sins on the cross. He doesn’t want you to live in shame—He wants you to walk in the abundant life He offers (John 10:10).
5. “I’m the only one who feels this way.”
Abortion is often hidden in secrecy, making those who regret it feel isolated. The enemy loves to whisper, “No one will understand. You’re alone.”
Truth: You are NOT alone. So many women and men have walked this journey and found healing. When you share your story in a safe place, you’ll realize that there are others who understand, and you’ll find strength in community.
